LCB Band Policies

Laguna Concert Band Policies

The Laguna Concert Band has grown into a fine Community Concert Band which programs very strong and diverse music to appreciative audiences in beautiful venues throughout Southern California.  Diversity of music, solo artist, and small ensembles are all key elements to the success of the LCB’s concerts, but it is the members themselves which are the heart and soul of the organization.

LCB  is an all-volunteer, non-profit organization of over 65 members from Laguna Beach and surrounding communities under the direction of Dr. Bill Nicholls, Ed Peterson and Pete Fournier.  LCB is a registered College Class offered through Irvine Valley College.

Mission Statement

“The mission of the Laguna Concert Band is to foster the musical talent and education of our members while striving to enrich the cultural life of the community by providing quality entertainment to diverse audiences. In addition, we strive to support music education and interact with other artistic organizations.”

Membership Acceptance and Member Responsibilities

1.        Instrumentation & class size will be upon discretion of the Music Director.

2.        Any community member may join LCB for a single rehearsal.  At the end of the rehearsal, the Music Director will let the player know if they are invited back for a second rehearsal.  Several factors are taken into consideration for this decision including band's current needs and player's current ability.  The Music Director can place the player on a wait-list if there is no current position available.

3.        New Members must register for class through IVC at $30 per class per semester. (LCB scholarships are offered to members where the tuition represents a financial hardship. See Ed Peterson for details.)

4.        All Members must own an instrument in good working condition with the exception of percussion.

5.        All Members must own a solid, all black music stand and battery operated stand light. No wire stands for performances.

6.        All Members need to purchase the band Hawaiian shirt and band red shirt  to be worn with tan pants and black shoes and socks.  Additionally, members must have  black formal wear: Men: Black jacket, white shirt, and black bow tie, black pants, black socks, and black shoes.  Ladies: Appropriate black dress or black blouse, pants or skirt, black stockings and black shoes.

7.        All Members are expected to take their music home, practice, and be well-prepared for rehearsal each week.

8.       All Members must attend all rehearsals & concerts. If any rehearsals or concerts are to be missed, advance notification to the Section Principal is required or it will be considered an unexcused absence.  The third unexcused absence results in being dropped from class; re-admittance is at Music Director approval only.

9.       Dress rehearsals are mandatory to perform in the following concert. If you are not playing the concert, do not play the dress rehearsal and advance notice is required.

10.      Although there are no auditions required for joining LCB, players are expected to be able to play their assigned parts.   If a significant portion of the music is too difficult for the player, a consultation with the Music Director and Section Principal  will be set up to discuss the issues.

11.     It is expected that all players practice at home to prepare for Tuesdays rehearsals. The use of a tuner and metronome during home practice is strongly advised.

12.     Tuesday Rehearsals with the entire band should be used to make music, not learn notes with the exception of sight readings.

        a.        Players are encouraged to arrive between 5:30 - 5:50 so that they can unpack, warm up, socialize & get  comfortable in their chair.
        b.        Use Room 54 for instrument cases, especially large cases.
        c.        First Tuning note is at 6 pm sharp.
        d.        Players arriving late must enter quietly & not disrupt the band.
        e.        Talking during rehearsal is discouraged.

13.     The Section Principal may consult with the Music Director to determine seating.  Members are encouraged to speak privately with their Section Principal if they are dissatisfied with their part.

Small Ensembles and Jazz Bands

It has been a longstanding policy that LCB membership is required for joining the small ensembles.  Exceptions are made for players of instruments which are not needed in the LCB or with Music Director's approval.

LCB programs offer two distinctly different Big Band approaches, a Dixieland Band, Flute and Sax Ensembles, brass quintets, and a Jazz combo.  See Ed Peterson for additional information.

Flute / Sax / Brass Quintets / Dixieland Band / Jazz Combos: Each group has different meeting schedules and gigs. Please see Music Director for current information.

SwingSet:  The Mission of SwingSet (SS) is to provide a traditional Big Band format of 1 full time player per part, with exceptions, to intermediate to advanced players. Emphasis is placed on performances which showcase the band to promote the entire LCB program.

Laguna Swing Society: The Mission of the Laguna Swing Society (LSS) is to develop players in the music genre of early Jazz. The LSS is open to up to 2 full time players per part per conductor’s approval, performs regular gigs, and is an integral part of the entire LCB program structure.

SwingSet / Laguna Swing Society Membership:

1.        SwingSet offers 1 person per part only (with exception per Music Director approval).   An approved sub list for SwingSet will be set and managed by Music Director and Brian Cameron.

2.        Laguna Swing Society offers doubling on all parts except lead trumpet, piano, and bass.  An approved sub list for LSS will be set and managed by Dr. Nicholls

3.        Chairs are determined by Ed Peterson for SwingSet and Bill Nicholls for Laguna Swing Society.

4.       Players may play in both bands only if space is available and per Conductor approval.
